MS Powertoys -- WebCam Application
Webcam Timershot is a "PowerToy lets you take pictures at specified time intervals from a Webcam connected to your computer and save them to a location that you designate"; I run this on a Win XP machine, which stores the file on a Debian server on my network, where I reference it for inclusion in a webpage.

Secure iXplore (SSH client -- more secure than straight FTP)
although I now believe the also free FileZilla is better (and supports SFTP through SSH), this client gets honorable mention: "all communication is secured by means of strong encryption using the SSH standard protocol" -- yet has a standard FTP-type GUI (graphical user interface); (WIN32; GNU/free)

Buenaventura Durruti, the famous Spanish anarchist, shot in the lung the day before, dies. Durruti's body was taken to Barcelona, where he was buried in a ceremony attended by over 500,000 people.

President Carter briefs incoming President Reagan for over an hour on various secret matters in which the government is currently involved; Reagan is disengaged throughout the briefing and clearly bored, he takes no notes and his only comment is an expression of envy for South Korean dictator Park's power to crackdown on student protests by closing the universities and drafting the students.
