Norman Thomas, Socialist candidate for president, born.

Buenaventura Durruti, the famous Spanish anarchist, shot in the lung the day before, dies. Durruti's body was taken to Barcelona, where he was buried in a ceremony attended by over 500,000 people.

1980
President Carter briefs incoming President Reagan for over an hour on various secret matters in which the government is currently involved; Reagan is disengaged throughout the briefing and clearly bored, he takes no notes and his only comment is an expression of envy for South Korean dictator Park's power to crackdown on student protests by closing the universities and drafting the students.

1983
Reagan administration propaganda regarding the supposed survivability of nuclear war leads over 100 million Americans to watch the miniseries The Day After on ABC.
