A government that habitually ignored expert advice, habitually pressed its interests abroad in ways that ignored manifest needs and priorities in the wider human and non-human environment, habitually repressed criticism or manipulated public media ? such a regime would, to say the least, jeopardise its claim to obedience because it was refusing attention. Its policies and its rhetoric would not be designed to secure for its citizens an appropriate position in the world, a position that allowed the best kind of freedom because it did not deceive or encourage deception about the way the world is. It would be concerned finally about control and no more; and so would be a threat to its citizens and others.

Republican Smear Ad Misrepresents Cleland |

Ad uses Saddam, bin Laden to question Cleland's record
Oct. 11, 2002 | Associated Press
by JEFFREY McMURRAY
WASHINGTON - Sen. Max Cleland is angrily defending himself against a rival's television ad that shows pictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden and implies the Democratic incumbent is soft on homeland security.
The ad, sponsored by Republican Rep. Saxby Chambliss' Senate campaign, doesn't directly compare Cleland and the rogue leaders but alleges the senator isn't telling the truth when he claims to support some of President Bush's efforts in the war against terrorism. It began airing Friday in the Atlanta market.
The ad's primary focus is Cleland's position on legislation creating a homeland security department Bush is seeking. Although Cleland supports one version of that bill, he says he won't support the president's preference without an amendment guaranteeing labor rights for federal workers.
"To put my picture up there with Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden and insinuate I'm not fighting hard enough for national security, I just find that this is an incredible low in Georgia politics," Cleland said.
The ad claims Cleland voted against Bush's preferred department 11 times, most in procedural votes as the legislation moved through the committee process. In a statement from his campaign, Chambliss said he appreciates the war record of Cleland - who lost both legs and an arm in a Vietnam grenade blast - but urged him to follow the president's lead on homeland security.
"Georgians deserve to know - all Americans deserve to know - why Max Cleland is more concerned with protecting federal bureaucracy, rules and regulations than creating a department that can respond effectively to future threats of terrorism," Chambliss said. |

Interesting to note the "In the News" section. The paragraph about Max Cleland, who will introduce Kerry at the DNC tonite says quite factually that he was "injured in a grenade attack" in Vietman and that his opponent in the US Senate race in Georgia in 2002 had "questioned his patriotism and war record". I've lived in Georgia my entire life and am very familiar with Mr. Cleland. He was injured in Vietman after he dropped a live grenade in a rear staff area. This not a "grenade attack", but was tragic none the less. We Georgians liked Cleland and gave him the utterly simple job of Secretary of State for for 30 years. He was not a good Senator and was WAY LEFT of the state's votors. Senator Chambliss NEVER questioned his patriotism - he just pointed out this man's negative voting record. In a final bid for the sympathy vote which we had always given him in the unimportant job of Secretary of State - it was he who made the "unpatriotic" claim. Alass it failed and he was swamped in the election. He is mad at Bush since Bush helped to campaign for Chambliss

Typical incorrect right wing parroting by this uninformed cretin. It is well-settled that Max Cleland did not drop the grenade that detonated. He thought it was his and went to pick it up. However, some newbie had dropped the grenade and had altered the pin setting which caused it to explode.
This accident occurred days after Cleland earned the Silver Star.
I guess if you repeat it enough, anything can become the truth (like Bush actually served his full term in the National Guard....).
It's interesting that all the right wingers focus Kerry's and Cleland's non-Silver Star (and both won Bronze Stars as well) actions and forget the fact that these men saved their fellow soldiers' lives in Vietnam while Bush while serving in the Champagne unit at Ellington Air Force Base (and then never bothered showing up for the Alabama National Guard). Ironic???
