The Guardian of London is reporting that links have been discovered between senior U.S. military officials and a failed coup plot in the oil-rich African nation of Equatorial Guinea. The Pentagon’s deputy assistant secretary of Defense for African affairs reportedly met twice with a British man who has been accused of being one of the coup organizers. The coup has received considerable attention in Britain because former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s son Sir Mark Thatcher was arrested for helping to fund the failed plot. The president of Equatorial Guinea has accused the US of backing the plot but the Bush administration has denied playing any role.
